KCW Celebrates the Success of the 30-Day Environmental Challenge with an Award Ceremony

Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organized a grand Award Ceremony to mark the successful completion of the 30-Day Environmental Challenge, an initiative aimed at fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Mr. Jasdev Singh Sekhon, Zonal Commissioner, Ludhiana, as the Chief Guest. Dr. Balwinder Singh Lakhewali, a renowned environmentalist, and Mr. Samarth Sharma, CEO of the National Edu Trust, were also present as distinguished guests of honor. Their inspiring words encouraged students to continue their commitment to environmental stewardship.

The 30-Day Environmental Challenge saw enthusiastic participation from students, who actively engaged in various eco-friendly activities such as reducing plastic use, air drying clothes, promoting car-free days, composting, and unplugging devices to conserve energy. The initiative, organized under the guidance of the college’s dedicated faculty, has made a significant impact on the students’ attitudes towards sustainability.

The event also included a video presentation showcasing the various activities undertaken by the students throughout the 30 days, followed by student feedback sessions where they shared their learnings and experiences from the challenge.

The ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates to the participating students by the dignitaries. Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, Principal of Khalsa College for Women, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the guests and congratulated the Nodal Officer Dr Monita Dhiman and the students for their active involvement. She reaffirmed the college’s commitment to continuing such initiatives in the future.

B.Sc. (honours) Biotechnology Student from Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana Visit to  College of Animal Biotechnology (GADVASU) Ignites Interest in Biotechnological Advancements

[Ludhiana, 11thSeptembert, 2024] – Students of B.Sc. (honours) Biotechnology   along with two faculty members, embarked on a captivating journey into the realm of cutting-edge biotechnology during their visit to the College of Animal Biotechnology (GADVASU). The visit, provided an insightful opportunity for the students to explore diverse areas of animal biotechnology, including stem cell research, viral vaccine production, virus isolation, animal genomics, Animal cell culture and bioinformatics.

Dr. C.S. Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Ratan K. Choudhary, Dr Manu M, Dr. Adarsh Mishra and Dr. B.V Sunil under the able guidance of Dr. S. K Uppal (Dean, CoABT), held informative interactions with the students regarding their respective areas of research. During interactive sessions, the students gained insights into the practical applications of biotechnology in the fields of  Animal cell culture and Genetic engineering.

The visit left an indelible impression on the students, igniting profound interest in the potential of research areas in the field of animal biotechnology.

Department of Home Science, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana commemorates “National Nutrition Week”

The Department of Home Science at KCW, located in Civil Lines, Ludhiana, commemorated National Nutrition Week on September 9th and 10th, 2024. This year’s theme was “Balanced Diet – Affordable for All.”

To celebrate this occasion, a poster-making competition was held on September 9th, 2024 attracting participation from twenty students across various disciplines, including Bachelor of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, and Beauty and Wellness. The students created visually striking posters that highlighted the significance of a balanced diet. These visual aids underscored the principles of “eating the right food” and “eating the right amount.”

The visual aids effectively maintained a harmonious relationship between the images and slogans, communicating messages relevant to our daily food choices. The slogans conveyed the idea that grains should be the most significant part of our diet, followed by vegetables. Dairy products should be consumed in moderation, while the intake of fats and sugary foods should be minimized. Furthermore, it is essential to consume an adequate amount of fluids to promote a healthy body.

The assessment of the visual aids was carried out by Ms. Ashu Lakhanpal and Ms. Sukhjeet Kaur, faculty members in the Department of Fine Arts. They focused on the principles and elements of art during their evaluation and chose three exemplary posters that reflected the theme of nutrition week.

In the subsequent portion of the commemoration, a culinary contest was organized, requiring students to create breakfast recipes that exemplified a balanced meal within a timeframe of one hour and thirty minutes. Approximately eighteen students participated, demonstrating their culinary talents by preparing a variety of delicious dishes in accordance with the “five food group plan.” The dishes included mushroom quesadillas, avocado toasts, fusion idli, moong-dal tikkis, chickpea chaat with gram flour pancakes and sago khichdi. These were served with a selection of smoothies made from yogurt and fresh fruits.

In anticipation of the evaluation, the students took great care in plating their dishes to achieve the highest standards. The judges, Dr. Ritu Ahuja (faculty, department of mathematics) and Dr. Shaveta Chugh, (faculty, department of commerce) recognized the hard work of the students and identified the four best recipes to reward their culinary abilities.

Principal Dr. Kanwaljit Grewal lauded the creativity demonstrated by the students over the two-day event and congratulated Dr. Amarinder Caur, the Head of the Home Science department, for the event’s successful conclusion.

Exhibition of Historical Rarities Held at KCW

The Post Graduate Department of History of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organized an exhibition displaying historical rarities. The objective of the exhibition was to connect  youngsters to our historical heritage and legacy. Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal along with Director Dr. Mukti Gill  graced the event.

Antiquarian and Numismatist Dr. Parminder Singh who began his historical collection 32 years ago, displayed his treasure trove in a show with around 50 stalls. The exhibition featured rare coins from the period of Chandragupta Maurya to Mughal and Sikh rulers. There were Hindu Religious scriptures written in Sanskrit and Sikh Religious scriptures in Gurmukhi. Variety of weapons  belonging  to British rule and Sikh period comprised of a huge display of swords, gupti, khanda, tega, Maratha swords and bakhtarband weighing 40kgs worn by the warriors. Another attraction was hand crafted bagh phulkaris, baskets, boxes, utensils and bags. Students from various colleges of the city along with their teachers visited the exhibition.

The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal congratulated Dr. Ramandeep Kaur, Head of History Department and the entire staff for arranging a show that bespoke volumes about our heritage and legacy.

Suicide Prevention Day 10th September 2024

The Department of Psychology, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organized an Inter-Class Brochure Designing Competition to mark the Suicide Prevention Day on 10th September 2024.

65 participants from all the streams and various classes participated in this competition aimed at spreading awareness regarding the Narrative on Suicide and to create creative expression on participants.

The judges for the event were Mrs. Gurjot Kaur and Ms. Tanu, Assistant Professors from the Department of Computer Science. Ms. Tulika Biwalkar from BA-III won the first position, while, Jaspreet Kaur from B.Sc.-III Biotech and Jiya from BA-III were bracketed second. Ridhman Kaur from BCA-III and Sneha Nanda from BCA-II bagged bracketed third prizes for their creative and positive contribution towards Community Mental Health.

The Brochure Designing Competition was a successful event that combined creativity with social impact.

The Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal, distributed the prizes and applauded the efforts of the Psychology Department for organizing such initiatives so as to encourage everyone to work together to prevent suicide and promote Mental Health Awareness.

NCC Department of KCW organised “TREE PLANTATION DRIVE”

In an earlier attempt to lend a green touch to the environment and sensitize the people about their role in conserving it, NCC department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines Ludhiana and 3Pb Girls Bn NCC in collaboration with 103 INF Bn (TA) Sikhli regiment organised “Tree Plantation Drive” on 7th September 2024 in the college campus. The drive was undertaken under the stewardship of College Director Dr. (Mrs.) Mukti Gill, Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal, Col. Rajashri Das and Associate NCC Officer Capt. (Dr.) Paramjeet Kaur. Subedar Sukhwinder Singh, Nb/Subedar Vijay Kumar and other staff members of 103 INF Bn (TA) along with 90 NCC cadets took part in this green drive.

The event was meant to instil the value of social responsibility towards safeguarding trees and forests among young cadets. It was aimed to bring awareness about the green cover around earth. The event strengthening the bond between plants and humans. Total 50 plants were planted in campus and distributed to the cadets.

College Principal Dr.(Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal appreciated the efforts put in by NCC department. She motivated the cadets for their sincere efforts and enlightened the cadets with great knowledge regarding the environment. She also added about the constant falling of trees in India has been a long time problem and such initiatives are important in creating awareness in the issue.

KCW Bags Top Positions in PU in M.Sc. Maths

Proving their mettle once again, students of PG Department of
Mathematics of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana aced
the examination of M.Sc. Mathematics (Semester IV), conducted by
Panjab University, Chandigarh in May, 2024. Rattandeep Kaur stood
third in Panjab University and first in college by securing 88.85 %.
Taniya Arora stood fourth in P.U. and second in college by securing
88.5% and Ravnoor Kaur stood third in college by securing 84.4%. The
overall result is 100%.
Position holders gave the credit of their success to regular studies and
efforts put by them and the teachers.
College Managing Committee congratulated Principal, staff & students
for their outstanding performance and maintaining the legacy. Principal
Dr.(Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal wished them good luck for their future.

Freshers’ Party of the Department of Sciences, Brims with Talent, Celebration, and Tribute to Teachers

The Department of Sciences of KCW, came together to host a spectacular Freshers’ Party, Euphoria 2024, welcoming the newest members of the college community with a vibrant function. The event was an exciting mix of dance, music, and celebration, showcasing the diverse talents of both the new and senior students. The event kicked off with a series performances from bollywood tunes to bhangra beats, the performances captivated the audience, reflecting the energy and enthusiasm that the freshers brought with them.

The key highlight of the event was the ramp walk competition, wherein students walked the ramp with confidence and style, showcasing not just fashion but their individuality. The competition saw enthusiastic participation, with winners selected based on their elegance, creativity, and overall presence on stage. The ramp walk was judged by esteemed faculty members, Dr. Narinderjit Kaur, Dr. Honey Walia, Dr. Khushdeep Kaur, who brought their keen eye for detail and sense of style to the event.

In a heartwarming moment, the event took a brief pause to celebrate Teacher’s Day, with students paying tribute to their teachers. The special ceremony highlighted the invaluable role that teachers play in shaping the future of students.

The Principal of the college, Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, was present to grace the occasion, praising the students for their efforts and emphasizing the importance of both academic and extracurricular activities in holistic development.

Faculty Development Programme held at KCW

Counselling Cell of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organised a Faculty development Programme,  Celebrating Teaching in collaboration with Art of Living (NGO) for the teaching staff on September 5, 2024.

Sumandeep Kaur, youth coordinator of Art of Living (NGO) was the guest speaker of the event. She deliberated upon the issues pertaining to routine life and stress points. She emphasised upon the need to master  life skills to deal with the challenges of  life. She also discussed pranayam and its role to bring mind and body in sync with the present moment and how meditation is a life transforming experience.

The lecture concluded with a meditation experience carried out by the speaker for the teachers. The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal applauded the efforts of Dr. Aditi,  Incharge of Counselling Cell for the initiative.

Investiture Ceremony 2024-25 at KCW

To inculcate the sense of responsibility and commitment among the students and to develop culture of compassion and reverence, investiture ceremony of Student Council was held at Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana on 4th September, 2024 with great enthusiasm. The investiture ceremony signified the reliance and confidence that the college consigned in the newly elected council members.

On this momentous occasion, President, Vice-President, Secretary of the council and class representatives of Post Graduate and Under Graduate classes were conferred with badges and sashes by the Principal of the college, Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, Council Incharge Dr. Khushdip Kaur & faculty members of various departments. While decorating with sashes, the newly elected team was entrusted with special duties to uphold the value of discipline and academic standards of college and act as role models for their peers. Donning the mantle of accountability, they pledged to bestow their duties to the best of their abilities. The excitement of the new council members was palpable as they marched in with their heads held high, ready to shoulder the responsibilities as student leaders.

The Principal of the college encouraged and blessed the newly elected council members with her golden views which would help the students to make their vision clearer for the achievement for their goals by preforming their duties with full dedication.
