B.Sc-Non-Medical students excelled in various competitions held on National Science Day at L.P.U

National Science Day is celebrated every year on 28 th  February to commemorate the discovery of the
‘Raman Effect’ made by the eminent physicist Sir C.V. Raman. On National Science Day, theme
based science communication activities are carried out all over the country.
The School of Chemical Engineering and Physical Sciences of L.P.U. marked National Science Day
2025 on February 28th with an online ,offline and hybrid mode, aligning with this year’s theme,
“Empowering Indian Youth for Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for a Developed India.”
The event focused on highlighting the crucial role of youth in driving scientific progress and
technological innovation in the nation.The program featured a compelling guest lecture titled “The
Role of Indian Youth in Shaping a Technologically Advanced Nation,” which explored the
contributions of young people to the country’s tech landscape and their potential to accelerate
progress in various scientific fields.Participants were actively engaged in a Science Quiz, which was
conducted in both online and offline formats, offering an exciting opportunity to test and enhance
their scientific knowledge.Riya Thakur,Taranpreet Kaur,Niharika Tayal from B.Sc-3(N.M.) got third
prize in science quiz.Additionally, the elocution competition, with the theme “Edu Revolution: Role
of AI in the Future of Education,” allowed students to share their thoughts on how artificial
intelligence could revolutionize education and shape future learning environments.Inayat sabharwal of
B.Sc –I(N.M) won the first prize in elocution.A standout feature of the event was the poster
presentation titled “Science and Innovation for a Developed India,” where students displayed their
innovative ideas and visions for a future driven by scientific advancements.The prize in this category
was clinched by Prisha Murghai of B.Sc-III(N.M). Students from various prestigious institutions,
including *Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, **SCD Govt. College for Boys, Ludhiana, and
*CBC Institute Nokodhar, along with students from several schools and colleges across Punjab,
participated enthusiastically in the event.The event saw the enthusiastic participation of over 100
students. It successfully underscored the vital role of India’s youth in scientific and technological
development, reinforcing their potential to lead the nation towards a brighter, technologically

National Science Day celebrations at Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana

The National Science Day celebrations at Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana,
commenced with an enlightening assembly where students were informed about the
significance of the day. The assembly focused on the groundbreaking discovery of the Raman
Effect by Dr. C.V. Raman in 1928, a remarkable achievement that not only earned him the
Nobel Prize but also made lasting contributions to the field of physics.
In recognition of the day, students actively participated in raising awareness about the
ongoing “Planet Parade”—a rare astronomical event where seven planets align in the sky.
During the assembly, students provided a brief history of planetary alignments and explained
the science behind why such events occur. They also encouraged their peers to step outside
and observe the alignment of these planets in the evening. Students were motivated to capture
this celestial phenomenon and share their experiences on instagram, inviting others to witness
the wonders of science.
As a symbolic gesture of awareness and participation, students proudly wore badges to mark
their involvement in the Planet Parade event. These badges were also distributed to teachers,
who were encouraged to join the students in observing the celestial event. The badges served
as a reminder of the collective curiosity, enthusiasm, and appreciation for science and
astronomy that the entire college community shared.
The event successfully promoted scientific inquiry and fostered a sense of wonder among
students, inspiring them to explore the mysteries of the universe. Principal of Khalsa College
for Women, Dr. Kamajit Grewal, and Dr. Charita Mehta, Head of the Physics Department,
emphasized the importance of scientific exploration and how such events inspire students to
learn more about the wonders of the universe. The college hopes that this celebration will
encourage more students to pursue careers in science and technology.

Organized an educational visit in collaboration with WWF-INDIA to Harike Pattan Wetlands and Bird Sanctuary on 26th February, 2025

Department of Chemistry and Department of Geography, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organized an educational visit in collaboration with WWF-INDIA to Harike Pattan Wetlands and Bird Sanctuary on 26th February, 2025. 50 students accompanied by 2 teachers had a close encounter with nature at Harike Pattan. Students visited the interpretation centre at Harike where Ms. Sarabjit Kaur and Mr. Tarsem Singh showed them pictures of various migratory birds that visit this beautiful wetland every year. Students were told that dolphins and ghadiyals are the residents of these wetlands and WWF along with other organizations are working towards their conservation. As many as 50,000 migratory birds were shown up this year as per the bird count data. After that students had a long nature walk where they got the chance to see the spectacular flora and fauna. The students were made aware about the fact that these wetlands are the most productive part of the environment and cradles of biodiversity that provides habitat to countless species of plants and animals. At the observation tower, students used binoculars to have a closer view of the birds and vegetation surrounding the wetlands. In the end, students took a pledge to keep their environment clean and contribute towards biodiversity conservation by creating awareness among the people around. Madam Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal appreciated the efforts of the teacher coordinators Dr. Aanchal Arora and Ms. Kulwinder Kaur to organize this visit and also extended heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Gitanjali Kanwar, Project Coordinator, WWF-India, Harike Pattan for providing our students this wonderful opportunity.

Alumni get together ‘Sunehri Pairraan’ held at KCW

The corridors of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana came alive as it opens its heart and doors for the alumni with a get together organized by the old students association under the title ‘Sunehri Pairran’ at college campus on February 22, 2025. Our esteemed alumna working in various fields decorated their alma mater with their gracious presence. More than 250 members registered for the event.

 Ms. Shinee Singh, ACST Ludhiana 3 was the chief guest of the day and Mrs. Rama Munjal, social activist ,  founder and president Arpita Cancer Society was the guest of Honor. Madam Kushal Dhillon, Manager Khalsa College and Director Dr. Mukti Gill were among the esteemed guests of the day.

Our esteemed alumna,  state awardee,  Dr. Rachna Sharma, Chairman, Bal Vikas Trust along with other notable members Mrs Shruti and Mrs. Rijuta of Old Students Association also graced the event. The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal accorded a warm welcome to the  guests on their arrival. The programme kick started with the shabad gayan. The highlight of the event was Punjabi singer Kamal Khan who mesmerised the audience with soulful singing. Another feature was the cultural bonanza presented by the students.

Alumna achievers from 1985 to the recent years were honoured at the event. The executive members of old students association were also acknowledged for their constant support and contribution towards the institute. The alumni shared their experiences and unforgettable moments of the good old days.

The Principal Dr. Kamajit Grewal applauded the efforts of the coordinator Mrs. Jasbir Kaur, Department of Political Science, for organising the reunion. She also appreciated the alumni guests for giving back to society contributing in their own unique ways. The day culminated with photos clicked at selfie corner creating memories together to cherish them later.

Extension Lecture on Writing Skills held at KCW

The English Department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organised an extension lecture on Writing Skills on 21st February, 2025 in the Seminar Hall. The objective was to educate students on nuances of writing English.

Dr. Jaskiran Tiwana, author and Professor  at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada was the resource person of the event. Dr. Tiwana enlightened the students on the nuances of writing while discussing rhyme scheme, meter and importance of using literary devices. She also talked about books and her inspirational journey of being an author.

She shared insights on her debut poetry book titled – ‘The Guava Tree’ which is a collection of uplifting poetry that celebrates life in all its seasons and her second book, titled – ‘Marmalade Memoirs’ that celebrates her childhood and growing up years; she says is an intellectual exploration into the meaning of life. Being an alumna of KCW, she inspired students as she guided them on future career choices.

Organize Inter-College Competition to Celebrate National Mathematics Day on 19th February 2025

National Mathematics day was celebrated by the PG Department of Mathematics at Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana on 19th February 2025. In this regard various  inter-college competition organised with support of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.The event was graced by an extension lecture delivered by Dr. R.R. Sinha, Head of the Department of Mathematics & Computing, Dr. BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar. Dr. Sinha’s lecture provided valuable insights into the significance of mathematics in various fields and its practical applications.As part of the celebrations, competitions of presentations and Poster Making were held. As many as 105 students from various colleges across the state participated in these competitions. The themes for the competitions were: Indian Mathematicians,Mathematical Modelling,Mathematics in Everyday Life and Mathematics in Art and Design.The competition saw enthusiastic participation, and winners were recognised for their creativity and knowledge. The results of the competition were as follows For poster making Parminder kaur,komaljot kaur from  government College for girls  stood first ,Kritika Sharma,kawaljot kaur from Guru Nanak  Khalsa college For Women stood second ,Nitika and Prabhleen kaur from Khalsa College for women stood third and Simranjit kaur,Parmjit kaur from Khalsa college for Women Sidhwan Khurd got Consolation Prize . For presentation Competition Komalpreet Kaur,Taranpreet kaur from Guru Nanak Engineering College stood first,Mohit Sharma,Jasanjot Singh from Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College stood second,Sukhpreet kaur, Pavleen kaur from Devki Devi Jain College of Education stood Third, Shivani Sharma,Saania Chopra from Arya college ,Purvi,Simran kaur from  Khalsa college for women got Consolation Prize. Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal commended the faculty for successfully organising such a meaningful event and appreciated the efforts of all the participants. She presented trophies to the winners and encouraged the department to continue organising such events in the future, further promoting the importance of mathematics and its real-world applications.This event was a great success in celebrating the contributions of mathematics to society and in fostering a spirit of learning and creativity among students.

EMOTIONAL REGULATION WORKSHOP BY DR. NAYANIKA SINGH

The Department of Psychology, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organized a one-day workshop on Emotional Regulation by Dr. Nayanika Singh, Mental Health Consultant, Internationally Certified Mindfulness Practitioner and Emotional Freedom Therapy Coach. There were 64 participants from the Department of Psychology. The resource person Dr. Nayanika Singh introduced the concept of emotions and significance of their regulation in dealing with challenges in their daily life.

She highlighted the various Emotional Regulation strategies like mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, deep breathing, physical exercises and positive affirmations. These were further elaborated in through practical activities and participants were made proficient in their conceptual and practical usage.

The participants were also apprised of various steps towards Emotional Regulation. The participants were told to begin with Name the Emotion, Validate the Emotion, Identify triggers, Mediation or Mindfulness, Talking through emotion, Journaling, Notice when you need a break, Good sleep hygiene and Consider therapy.

The workshop concluded with the techniques of relaxation therapy and use of GSR machine to achieve Progressive Muscle Relaxation goals.

The Principal appreciated the efforts of faculty of Psychology Department in Providing opportunity to the students for skill development and experiential learning of theoretical concepts in pursuit of holistic education.

Red Ribbon Club Organized Village Camp Tilted “Punjabio Jaago Nashe Tiago”

Red Ribbon Club of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines organised one day village camp at Takshahila Vidya Mandir School, Churpur Road, Jassian, Haibowal Kalan, Ludhiana on the topic “Punjabi jaago nashe tiago” on 5th February, 2025. This rally aimed to deliver a positive health message, contrasting with other contemporary campaigns that employed fear-based tactics. Students and teachers actively participated in the event. Holding banners and placards with anti-drug messages, the participants marched through the main streets, chanting slogans against drug abuse.

The rally concluded with a pledge from all participants to work towards a drug-free society, reinforcing the message that ” Punjabio Jaago Nashe Tiago”. This event highlighted the ongoing challenges communities face due to drug addiction and the collective efforts to address them. It also point to raise awareness about the devastating effects of drug addiction and encourage a collective fight against this growing menace.

The Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal, applauded the efforts of the Red Ribbon Club team and Mrs. Sangeeta Sharma (secretary, managing committee) of the School for organizing such a meaningful and impactful event on drug abuse awareness.

KCW student shines at AIU Inter-University North Zone Youth Festival

Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana added another feather to its cap by winning  at the 38th AIU Inter-University North Zone Youth Festival held at Chandigarh from 1st to 5th Feb. 2025 under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi.

Rupali Sharma, student of BSc. II non- medical brought laurels to the college by  participating in the Mimicry event. She got 2nd place in the competition. College managing committee, Director Dr. Mukti Gill, the Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal congratulated Rupali and motivated her to scale new heights. She further applauded the efforts of the staff members and her mentor.

Celebration of Basant Panchami by Department of Home Science

Basant Panchami is an annual festival that is celebrated with immense enthusiasm and reverence throughout India. This festival signifies the onset of spring and is dedicated to the goddess Saraswati, who is venerated as the goddess of knowledge, music, arts, and science. It is widely believed that on this day, the goddess grants her devotees wisdom and knowledge, making it a particularly auspicious occasion for students, scholars, and intellectuals to offer their prayers and seek blessings for their academic and professional pursuits.

In recognition of the onset of spring, the Department of Home Science organized a Basant Panchami celebration on February 3, 2025. This event prominently featured an exhibition of “yellow cuisines,” which symbolize the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India as reflected in its culinary traditions.

The event saw the enthusiastic participation of undergraduate students. They prepared an array of “yellow cuisines,” such as kesar ghevar, idlis, dhoklas, vegetable biryani, meethe chawal, kesari bhaat, besan laddoo, and besan barfi. The students’ choice to don yellow attire added to the festive spirit of the occasion. The celebration was a true testament to the cultural richness of India.

Principal Dr. Kanwaljit Grewal commended the students for their innovative contributions to the celebration of this spring festival and congratulated Dr. Amarinder Caur, the Head of the Home Science Department, for the event’s overall success.
