Botanical Society, Khalsa College for Women, Civil lines, Ludhiana organized an exposure visit for B.Sc. Medical students to Vardhman Miyawaki forest located at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. This forest is designed to replicate a natural habitat through the Miyawaki methodology. The visit aimed to provide students with firsthand experience of sustainable forestry practices and foster a deeper understanding of ecological balance and biodiversity. The students were apprised of the Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese Botanist Akira Miyawaki, focusing on creating dense, native forests that require support local biodiversity with minimal maintenance. Launched under the CSR initiative of Vardhman Special Steel and facilitated by EcoSikh, the forest includes over 42 native species including kikkar, kachnaar, silk cotton, arjun, tahli, lasuda etc.
Mr. Amit Dhawan (Head CSR), Mr. Harnek Singh (Executive CSR) Mr. Vijay Sharma (Executive HR/Admn) and Mr. Satman Singh (Forest maker, Ecosikh) held informative interactions with students regarding the Japanese technique of creating diverse and multilayered forest. This visit provided an insightful opportunity for B.Sc medical students to explore the indigenous species of trees. During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore the forest, engage with nature, and observe the dense plantation. The rich diversity of flora fascinated the students, providing them with a tangible understanding of the Miyawaki methodology.
Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal expressed her profound appreciation for Vardhman Special Steels’ visionary initiative, emphasizing that it not only makes a significant contribution to ecological restoration but also serves as an invaluable educational platform for the students and future generations.
