Extension Lecture on Writing Skills held at KCW

The English Department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organised an extension lecture on Writing Skills on 21st February, 2025 in the Seminar Hall. The objective was to educate students on nuances of writing English.

Dr. Jaskiran Tiwana, author and Professor  at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada was the resource person of the event. Dr. Tiwana enlightened the students on the nuances of writing while discussing rhyme scheme, meter and importance of using literary devices. She also talked about books and her inspirational journey of being an author.

She shared insights on her debut poetry book titled – ‘The Guava Tree’ which is a collection of uplifting poetry that celebrates life in all its seasons and her second book, titled – ‘Marmalade Memoirs’ that celebrates her childhood and growing up years; she says is an intellectual exploration into the meaning of life. Being an alumna of KCW, she inspired students as she guided them on future career choices.

The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal congratulated Mrs. Sabina Bhalla, Head of English Department and the entire staff for taking the initiative.

Organize Inter-College Competition to Celebrate National Mathematics Day on 19th February 2025

National Mathematics day was celebrated by the PG Department of Mathematics at Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana on 19th February 2025. In this regard various  inter-college competition organised with support of Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) and the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.The event was graced by an extension lecture delivered by Dr. R.R. Sinha, Head of the Department of Mathematics & Computing, Dr. BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar. Dr. Sinha’s lecture provided valuable insights into the significance of mathematics in various fields and its practical applications.As part of the celebrations, competitions of presentations and Poster Making were held. As many as 105 students from various colleges across the state participated in these competitions. The themes for the competitions were: Indian Mathematicians,Mathematical Modelling,Mathematics in Everyday Life and Mathematics in Art and Design.The competition saw enthusiastic participation, and winners were recognised for their creativity and knowledge. The results of the competition were as follows For poster making Parminder kaur,komaljot kaur from  government College for girls  stood first ,Kritika Sharma,kawaljot kaur from Guru Nanak  Khalsa college For Women stood second ,Nitika and Prabhleen kaur from Khalsa College for women stood third and Simranjit kaur,Parmjit kaur from Khalsa college for Women Sidhwan Khurd got Consolation Prize . For presentation Competition Komalpreet Kaur,Taranpreet kaur from Guru Nanak Engineering College stood first,Mohit Sharma,Jasanjot Singh from Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College stood second,Sukhpreet kaur, Pavleen kaur from Devki Devi Jain College of Education stood Third, Shivani Sharma,Saania Chopra from Arya college ,Purvi,Simran kaur from  Khalsa college for women got Consolation Prize. Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal commended the faculty for successfully organising such a meaningful event and appreciated the efforts of all the participants. She presented trophies to the winners and encouraged the department to continue organising such events in the future, further promoting the importance of mathematics and its real-world applications.This event was a great success in celebrating the contributions of mathematics to society and in fostering a spirit of learning and creativity among students.

EMOTIONAL REGULATION WORKSHOP BY DR. NAYANIKA SINGH

The Department of Psychology, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, organized a one-day workshop on Emotional Regulation by Dr. Nayanika Singh, Mental Health Consultant, Internationally Certified Mindfulness Practitioner and Emotional Freedom Therapy Coach. There were 64 participants from the Department of Psychology. The resource person Dr. Nayanika Singh introduced the concept of emotions and significance of their regulation in dealing with challenges in their daily life.

She highlighted the various Emotional Regulation strategies like mindfulness, cognitive reappraisal, deep breathing, physical exercises and positive affirmations. These were further elaborated in through practical activities and participants were made proficient in their conceptual and practical usage.

The participants were also apprised of various steps towards Emotional Regulation. The participants were told to begin with Name the Emotion, Validate the Emotion, Identify triggers, Mediation or Mindfulness, Talking through emotion, Journaling, Notice when you need a break, Good sleep hygiene and Consider therapy.

The workshop concluded with the techniques of relaxation therapy and use of GSR machine to achieve Progressive Muscle Relaxation goals.

The Principal appreciated the efforts of faculty of Psychology Department in Providing opportunity to the students for skill development and experiential learning of theoretical concepts in pursuit of holistic education.

Red Ribbon Club Organized Village Camp Tilted “Punjabio Jaago Nashe Tiago”

Red Ribbon Club of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines organised one day village camp at Takshahila Vidya Mandir School, Churpur Road, Jassian, Haibowal Kalan, Ludhiana on the topic “Punjabi jaago nashe tiago” on 5th February, 2025. This rally aimed to deliver a positive health message, contrasting with other contemporary campaigns that employed fear-based tactics. Students and teachers actively participated in the event. Holding banners and placards with anti-drug messages, the participants marched through the main streets, chanting slogans against drug abuse.

The rally concluded with a pledge from all participants to work towards a drug-free society, reinforcing the message that ” Punjabio Jaago Nashe Tiago”. This event highlighted the ongoing challenges communities face due to drug addiction and the collective efforts to address them. It also point to raise awareness about the devastating effects of drug addiction and encourage a collective fight against this growing menace.

The Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal, applauded the efforts of the Red Ribbon Club team and Mrs. Sangeeta Sharma (secretary, managing committee) of the School for organizing such a meaningful and impactful event on drug abuse awareness.

KCW student shines at AIU Inter-University North Zone Youth Festival

Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana added another feather to its cap by winning  at the 38th AIU Inter-University North Zone Youth Festival held at Chandigarh from 1st to 5th Feb. 2025 under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi.

Rupali Sharma, student of BSc. II non- medical brought laurels to the college by  participating in the Mimicry event. She got 2nd place in the competition. College managing committee, Director Dr. Mukti Gill, the Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal congratulated Rupali and motivated her to scale new heights. She further applauded the efforts of the staff members and her mentor.

Celebration of Basant Panchami by Department of Home Science

Basant Panchami is an annual festival that is celebrated with immense enthusiasm and reverence throughout India. This festival signifies the onset of spring and is dedicated to the goddess Saraswati, who is venerated as the goddess of knowledge, music, arts, and science. It is widely believed that on this day, the goddess grants her devotees wisdom and knowledge, making it a particularly auspicious occasion for students, scholars, and intellectuals to offer their prayers and seek blessings for their academic and professional pursuits.

In recognition of the onset of spring, the Department of Home Science organized a Basant Panchami celebration on February 3, 2025. This event prominently featured an exhibition of “yellow cuisines,” which symbolize the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India as reflected in its culinary traditions.

The event saw the enthusiastic participation of undergraduate students. They prepared an array of “yellow cuisines,” such as kesar ghevar, idlis, dhoklas, vegetable biryani, meethe chawal, kesari bhaat, besan laddoo, and besan barfi. The students’ choice to don yellow attire added to the festive spirit of the occasion. The celebration was a true testament to the cultural richness of India.

Principal Dr. Kanwaljit Grewal commended the students for their innovative contributions to the celebration of this spring festival and congratulated Dr. Amarinder Caur, the Head of the Home Science Department, for the event’s overall success.

Organized  one day international seminar in the college Auditorium on ‘Punjabian di Ameer Virasat: Naitkta’

The Post Graduate Punjabi Department of Khalsa College for women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana  organized  one day international seminar in the college Auditorium on ‘Punjabian di Ameer Virasat: Naitkta’. President of Jagat Punjabi Sabha,Canada, Mr.  Ajaib Singh Chatha, S.  Sardool Singh Thiara, Dr.  Jasvir Singh, Dr.  Jasbir Kaur, Dr. Manpreet Kaur, Balwinder Kaur Chatha were among the Eminent personalities gracing the event.  Member of the college management committee, Sardarni Kushal Dhillon,  college Director Dr.  Mukti Gill, College Principal Dr.  Kamaljit Grewal and Head of Post Graduate Department Dr.  Narinderjit Kaur extended a warm welcome, on the arrival of guests in the college campus. The seminar kick-started with the Shabad Gayan of the college.  College Principal Dr.  Kamaljit Kaur Grewal extended appreciation and gratitude towards the esteemed guests of the event, highlighting the theme of the seminar welcomed the eminent personalities who arrived at the seminar. After this Dr.  Narinderjit Kaur shared the theme and objective of the Seminar at length.  A documentary in the context of ethics and moral values was showcased to deliver a message on the importance of values.

 In his inaugural address S.  Ajaib Singh Chatha deliberated on the subject of morality and stressed that moral values cannot be taught but nurtured. He also shared life enriching lessons and discussed at length the initiatives their society Jagat Sabha is taking by conducting lectures on moral education.  In the keynote address, Jasvir Singh, Principal, Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, Shri Anandpur Sahib emphasized on inculcating virtues such as honesty, truthfulness and trust and respect.  He further highlighted that virtues like humility, kindness and compassion  enrich our lives in many ways and we must inculcate these values. He appreciated the focus of NEP on Indian Knowledge system and moral education.

S. Sardool Singh Thiara along with S. Balwinder Singh Chatha chaired the Technical session 1. Dr. Jasbir Kaur, member Punjabi Jagat Sabha, Canada and Dr. Manpreet Kaur, Professor, GTB Khalsa College Shri Anandpur Sahib, presented their papers in the context of moral values. The speakers raised concerns on the contemporary scenario of youth and their approach towards life which is devoid of values. They further warn the youngsters to not to disregard their cultural heritage and mother tongue instead be proud of their roots. S. Thiara concluded the session with his insightful observations on the pressing concern of right parenting rooted in tradition and culture.

On this occasion, an edited book ‘Punjab, Punjabi and the Prominent Heroes of Punjabi Heritage’ was also launched.  A number of scholars, professors, teachers, researchers and students presented research papers on various contexts based on ethics and moral values.

The Principal Dr.  Kamaljit Grewal and Head of Punjabi Department Dr. Narinderjit Kaur honoured the visiting dignitaries and thanked them on their arrival at the college. College Principal congratulated the entire Punjabi department, appreciated their initiative and encouraged them to conduct such activities in the future.  The event was culminated with the beats of National Anthem.

Poster Making Activity on Drugs Abuse held at KCW

Red Ribbon Club of KCW organized an engaging Poster Making activity on drugs abuse to encourage creativity and artistic expression among students. The event aimed to enhance students’ presentation skills while spreading awareness on important topic like, Drugs abuse and drugs addiction. Students from different classes participated enthusiastically, showcasing their talent with colorful charts and impactful posters.

Each artwork reflected unique ideas, creativity, and thoughtful messages. The activity not only promoted teamwork and innovative thinking but also helped students develop their design and communication skills. Teachers appreciated the efforts of all participants, making the event a grand success. Such activities inspire young minds to express themselves beyond textbooks, fostering both learning and fun. The Principal, Dr. (Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal, applauded the efforts of Mrs. Sheetal Soi (Incharge, Red Ribbon Club) and members of club for organizing such initiatives.

The visit, held on Feb 01, 2025, included 110 students and eight faculty members. The objective was to provide students with practical exposure to industrial operations, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications in the FMCG sector.

Paos Industries ltd., established in 1957 under the name and style M/s. National Soap Mills , has a strong presence under the brand ‘RAJ’, offering  eco & user friendly products like detergent powders, dishwashing liquids  and cloth washing liquid detergents in various economy and premium categories. The company serves multiple states, including Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, along with international markets like the West Africa.

During the visit, students toured key departments, including the Production Department, where they observed the manufacturing processes of various soap and detergent products, and the Research and Development (R&D) Cell, which focuses on product innovation and quality enhancement. An engaging session in the conference hall introduced students to the company’s growth journey and business strategies.

Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal commended the faculty for organizing this enriching educational experience and extended gratitude to the Managing Director-Mr Sanjeev Bansal  and the Raj Soaps team for their hospitality and for offering high tea to the students. The visit provided invaluable insights into industrial processes, innovation, and corporate responsibility, equipping students with knowledge that strengthens their academic and professional growth.

Organized an extension lecture ‘Acing Career Opportunities’, a career guidance session on February 01, 2025

The Career Coaching Cell of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organized an extension lecture ‘Acing Career Opportunities’, a career guidance session on February 01, 2025 in the college campus. The objective of the session was to apprise the students about career opportunities in various fields viz. Technology, marketing and finance mainly focussing on Public healthcare.

 The resource person for the session was Ms.Mansharan Seth, Director William J. Clinton Foundation (India Affiliate of Chai.  Around 100 students from various streams participated in this career guidance session.

 The resource person apprised the students on the relevance of public healthcare sector while enlightening them on the various job careers such as management consultant, programme officer, data analyst and research scientist . She also informed about the prominent healthcare service provider companies such as Global Fund, Clinton Health Access, Unicef, WHO, NACO etc. She further discussed various opportunities where no medical background is required.

 Students participated very enthusiastically in the interactive session as they cleared their doubts asking questions to opt for a career in healthcare. The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal applauded the efforts of the members of  Career Coaching Cell.
