Wetland Day Celebrated by Department of Geography

The Geography Department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines , Ludhiana celebrated World Wetland Day on 1st February, 2025 (Saturday) in the college campus during morning assembly. The theme for the year 2025 is “Protect Wetlands for Our Common Future”.

The students were enlightened on the importance of Wetlands being referred to as Kidneys of the Earth. A quiz was also conducted based on wetlands and their importance and to spread awareness among students about the conditions of wetlands now-a-days. The event was culminated with pledge to preserve wetlands, promote environment sustainability etc. The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal applauded the efforts of the Geography Department.

Miniature Making Contest

The Department of Office Management proudly presents the Miniature Making Contest held today, 29th January 2025. Participants have showcased incredible creativity and attention to detail, demonstrating the art’s importance in precision and innovation. This exciting event highlights exceptional talent, reflecting dedication and artistic expression, making it an inspiring experience for all! The competition celebrates craftsmanship and encourages participants to think outside the box, pushing the boundaries of creativity. Such events play a vital role in fostering artistic growth and collaboration among budding talents.

The event was judged by Dr. Parminder Kaur (Head, Dept. of Computer Science) and Dr. Khushdip Kaur (Dept. of Commerce). A total of 36 students participated in this activity presenting miniatures on different topics namely office layout, organizational structure, office centralisation, communication channels, office machines, computer networking, input and output devices and office stationery. Winners were awarded with certificates. 

The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal applauded the efforts of the students and motivated them to excel further in their academic and creative pursuits. The event was conducted under the guidance of Mrs. Sheetal Soi (Incharge, Dept. of Office Management).

Lecture cum Workshop – “Mining Biological information using Bioinformatics and safeguarding using IPRs”

The Department of Biotechnology organized a Lecture cum Workshop on the topic “Mining
Biological Information Using Bioinformatics and Safeguarding Using IPRs” on 28 th
January, 2025 for the students of B.Sc (Hons.) Biotechnology. Dr. Alla Singh, Scientist/
Agricultural Biotechnologist, Indian Institute of Maize Research, PAU Campus, Ludhiana
was the resource person for the event. The event began on a cheerful note with an inaugural
ceremony, graced by the presence of respected Principal madam, followed by lecture on the
given topic by the esteemed invited speaker. The lecture emphasised on the importance of
Intellectual Property Rights in fostering innovation in the biotechnology field. Later, the
students were demonstrated with various tools in mining biological data using various
bioinformatics tools viz. BLAST, SWISS Model, PPI3D, IUPRED, STRING Database and
Patent filing. The workshop concluded with distribution of certificates to the participants in
the valedictory ceremony.
Overall the session was highly informative provided valuable insights into the intersection of
bioinformatics and IPRs – the objective of the event.
The college management and Principal Dr (Mrs.) Kamaljit Grewal appreciated the efforts of
the department in organising insightful & informative session and highlighted the role of
IPRs while understanding the significance of safeguarding intellectual contributions.

Nature Camp organised by KCW under Environment Education Program Culminated

The 3-day EnviroVenture Camp, organized under the Environment Education Program
by Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, in collaboration with the Punjab State
Council for Science and Technology and the Society for Conservation and Healing
Environment (SOCH), successfully concluded at Barota Farm, Kalar -Tibba Nangal.
Held from 26th to 28th January 2025, the camp provided students with an immersive
experience in nature conservation, wildlife awareness, and adventure-based learning.
Throughout the three days, students engaged in activities such as bird watching at Ropar
Wetland, an Indian Rock Python release under the Wild Shivalik Project, and an insightful
session on human-leopard conflict. Educational lectures, interactive competitions, and
adventure challenges like rope walking, commando bridges, and trekking offered a perfect
blend of knowledge and practical exposure. A special Republic Day cultural program, a
bonfire gathering, and a heritage walk exploring old artifacts added depth to the experience.
The camp concluded with a valedictory ceremony, where all participating students were
applauded and awarded certificates for their enthusiasm, dedication, and contribution to the
camp’s success. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Balwinder Singh Lakhewali
(Environmentalist and Project director, PAU Campus, Ludhiana), Dr. Brij Mohan Bhardwaj
(Secretary SOCH), and Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, who praised the students for their
curiosity, teamwork, and eagerness to learn. Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal shared her
thoughts on the students experiences and the valuable lessons they gained over the past three
days. She highlighted how such initiatives help in shaping responsible individuals who
understand the significance of environmental conservation.
She also extended appreciation to the faculty members Dr. Monita Dhiman, Dr. Renu, and
Ms. Mahima, whose efforts ensured the smooth execution of the camp. Special gratitude was
given to Dr. Balwinder Singh Lakhewali and Dr. Brij Mohan Bhardwaj for their patience,
dedication, and expertise in engaging with the students throughout the camp.
As students bid farewell to Barota Farm, they left with not just memories but a renewed
perspective on nature and sustainability. The camp reinforced the idea that conservation is not
just about protecting wildlife but also about understanding and coexisting with the
environment. With a sense of responsibility and inspiration, the students returned, eager to
continue their journey of exploration and learning.

National Girl Child Day ((23-01-2025)

Women Cell of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organised an extension
lecture on the occasion of National Girl Child Day on the topic Cervical Cancer Prevention,
Screening and HPV Vaccination on 23 rd January, 2025.This initiative emphasized the
importance of health education as a cornerstone of empowering young girls and women.
The keynote speaker, Dr Kavita M. Bhatti, (Professor and Head Department of OBGYN,
CMC & Hospital, Ludhiana), a distinguished expert in women’s health delivered an engaging
and thoughtful address. She underscored the critical role of early detection and prevention in
combating cervical cancer, advocating for regular screenings and the life-saving potential of
HPV vaccination. Her insightful discourse highlighted the need to prioritize women’s
healthcare and foster awareness among young girls about safeguarding their well-being.
The lecture was organised as a part of initiative aimed at empowering the girl child through
education and awareness. The College is committed to supporting this mission and promoting
awareness about crucial health.
The event was attended by students, faculty members of the college, who actively
participated in the discussion and engaged with Dr. Kavita M. Bhatti on various aspects of
cervical cancer prevention, the significance of regular screening and the role of HPV
vaccination in reducing risks.
Principal, Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, lauded the initiative and emphasized the college’s
unwavering dedication to empowering women through education, skill development and
health awareness. She extended her heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Bhatti for her enlightening
session and encouraged students to actively engage in such discussions for their personal and
societal growth.

Celebrated National Geographic Day on 27th January, 2025

The Geography Department of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana celebrated National Geographic Day on 27th January, 2025 in the college during morning assembly. The theme for the year 2025 is Support for Conservation and Sustainability.

 The students were enlightened on  the importance of Geography being referred to mother of all sciences as a subject and career opportunities in the field. A  quiz was conducted related to general geography highlighting the importance of the subject in contemporary times.

The event was culminated with a pledge to preserve environment, reduce waste by reusing and recycling, conserve energy resources , protect natural resources in order to achieve sustainability. The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal applauded the efforts of the Geography Department.

Launches “EnviroVenture” Nature Camp Under the Environment Education Program

Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, proudly inaugurated the much-anticipated “EnviroVenture” 3 day and 2 nights Nature Camp with 50 participants today, under the Environment Education Program. The camp, scheduled from 26th to 28th January 2025 at Kalar Tibba Nangal, is a collaborative initiative by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, supported by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India, and in association with the Society for Conservation and Healing Environment, Ludhiana. The camp aims to offer students a unique platform to connect with nature and learn about environmental conservation through hands-on activities. The program includes bird watching, Rescuing of wild animals, wild art sessions and trekking and hiking in the forest areas nearby. Sessions on India’s natural history, biodiversity conservation, and forest ecosystems, along with a workshop on camera trapping, will provide participants with valuable knowledge and practical experience. To make the experience more engaging, short competitions and cultural programs will be held during the evenings. The camp was formally inaugurated by Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal, who flagged off the event and commended the coordinator Dr Monita Dhiman for her visionary initiative. During the inauguration, students were registered, provided with their camp kits, and took a pledge to commemorate Republic Day. They also pledged their commitment to sustainable living under the Mission LiFE Program, aligning their efforts with the values of environmental stewardship.

Renowned environmentalist Dr. Balwinder Singh Lakhewali, Project Director (ATMA)-cum-Deputy Director PAMETI, PAU Campus, Ludhiana, delivered an inspiring keynote address during the ceremony. He emphasized the significance of environmental conservation and urged students to appreciate and protect the biodiversity surrounding them. His powerful words set the tone for the enriching three-day journey awaiting the participants. “EnviroVenture” Nature Camp represents a crucial step toward fostering eco-conscious citizens by blending education, adventure, and sustainability. The program is designed to leave a lasting impact on the participants, encouraging them to take proactive roles in preserving the environment and promoting sustainable practices.

Mega Job Fair on 24th January, 2025

The Placement Cell of Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organised Mega Job Fair on 24th January, 2025 on its campus to provide opportunities to young talent across the city. The mega event is a collaborative initiative of District Bureau of Employment and Enterprises (DBEE) Ludhiana with KCW under Punjab Government’ Campaigns such as Ghar Ghar Rozgar and Punjab Skill Development Mission.

Deputy commissioner Jitendra Jorwal was the chief guest of the event. DBEE Deputy Director Rupinder Kaur and Jeevandeep Singh EGSDTO DBEE, Ludhiana also graced the event along with IAS Kritika Goyal, Assistant Commissioner, Ludhiana. Members of Managing committee S. Gursimran Singh Grewal, Madam Kushal Dhillon, Director Dr. Mukti Gill and Principals and heads of sister institutes were among the esteemed guests of the day. The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal extended a warm welcome to the guests and appreciated the collaborative agencies . She further wished good luck to the job seekers of the day. The event began with college shabad gayan and lighting of ceremonial lamp.

While addressing the young aspirants DC Jitender Jorwal motivated them to participate enthusiastically. He further encouraged them to play a positive role in the building of a sustainable society where kindness and compassion are the ways of living. Around 40 companies participated in the fair while offering career opportunities in various Fields. Around 1500 youngsters registered online at the DBEE portal and approx. 1000 registered manually for various jobs. Around 1071 were shortlisted out of the  2163 job seekers who walked in for interviews.  Young  aspirants appeared for interviews in around 1870 vacancies  with companies such as SBI, Axis Max Life Insurance, PNB Met Life, DMart, job rabbits, ICICI, Mahindra infotech, Shiv soft, Fleet safety infotech, whizrobo, Ansh infotech etc.

The event became a huge success with a number of aspirants getting job proposals towards its conclusion. The Principal Dr. Kamaljit Grewal applauded the efforts of the coordinator Dr. Priyaka Khanna and the entire staff on the success of the event.

One day workshop on road safety and a month long Awareness Campaign

In alignment with the directives of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH),
the Traffic Club, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana in association with
Punjab Traffic Police, Ludhiana organized a one day workshop on road safety and a month
long Awareness Campaign ‘# Wear Helmet’ as part of the National Road Safety Month. The
month long campaign, observed nation-wide from January 1 to 31, aims to promote safer
roads through education, advocacy and community engagement.
The workshop brought together Traffic Club volunteers and stakeholders to raise
awareness about road safety measures and to decrease road accidents. Students visited
Children Traffic Training Park, Model Town, Ludhiana where Mr. Jasvir Singh, Incharge,
Education Cell of Traffic Police Ludhiana emphasized the importance of road safety in daily
life, provided practical road safety tips, discussed accident statistics in India and Punjab, and
emphasized the use of ISI marked helmets, and seat belts. Traffic club volunteers also gained
practical knowledge about the right ways of wearing helmets and to check proper functioning
of vehicle brakes.
A month long campaign on wear helmet, themed ‘Suraksha Kavach’ was also
observed by Traffic Club Volunteers who encouraged the college students to wear helmets
while riding two wheelers and presented roses to those who already wore helmets. Dr. (Mrs.)
Kamaljit Grewal commended the Traffic Police Punjab for their commitment to ensure
civilian safety and encouraged future collaborations for community welfare. Madam
Principal also appreciated the Traffic club for their efforts to educate students about the
benefits of wearing helmet and their role in nation building.

Republic Day (22-01-2025)

The Department of Political Science, Khalsa College for Women, celebrated the 76 th Republic
Day with enthusiasm by organising a Declamation Contest on the theme “Swarnim
Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas”. The event highlighted India’s rich heritage and its
achievements in development. Students participated in the contest, sharing their thoughts on
India’s glorious history and vision for the future. Their speeches reflected patriotism and a
deep understanding of the country’s progress.
The judge appreciated the innovative ideas and artistic skills displayed by the students.
Principal Dr.Kamal Grewal congratulated the winners and emphasized the significance of
Republic Day, urging students to contribute to the nation’s growth and development. She
praised the participants for their thoughts- provoking speeches and commended their
commitment to the nation.
Winners and participants of the contest were awarded with certificates. Ms. Kanu Rai, Ms.
Deepansha from BA III and Tanisha Kalsi (BA I) bagged first, second and third position
respectively. Everyone was encouraged to continue their journey of learning and self-
expression. The college remains committed to fostering a sense of responsibility, patriotism
and progress among its students, ensuring they are equipped to lead the nation into a brighter
future.
