The Department of Home Science at KCW, located in Civil Lines, Ludhiana, commemorated National Nutrition Week on September 9th and 10th, 2024. This year’s theme was “Balanced Diet – Affordable for All.”
To celebrate this occasion, a poster-making competition was held on September 9th, 2024 attracting participation from twenty students across various disciplines, including Bachelor of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, and Beauty and Wellness. The students created visually striking posters that highlighted the significance of a balanced diet. These visual aids underscored the principles of “eating the right food” and “eating the right amount.”
The visual aids effectively maintained a harmonious relationship between the images and slogans, communicating messages relevant to our daily food choices. The slogans conveyed the idea that grains should be the most significant part of our diet, followed by vegetables. Dairy products should be consumed in moderation, while the intake of fats and sugary foods should be minimized. Furthermore, it is essential to consume an adequate amount of fluids to promote a healthy body.
The assessment of the visual aids was carried out by Ms. Ashu Lakhanpal and Ms. Sukhjeet Kaur, faculty members in the Department of Fine Arts. They focused on the principles and elements of art during their evaluation and chose three exemplary posters that reflected the theme of nutrition week.
In the subsequent portion of the commemoration, a culinary contest was organized, requiring students to create breakfast recipes that exemplified a balanced meal within a timeframe of one hour and thirty minutes. Approximately eighteen students participated, demonstrating their culinary talents by preparing a variety of delicious dishes in accordance with the “five food group plan.” The dishes included mushroom quesadillas, avocado toasts, fusion idli, moong-dal tikkis, chickpea chaat with gram flour pancakes and sago khichdi. These were served with a selection of smoothies made from yogurt and fresh fruits.
In anticipation of the evaluation, the students took great care in plating their dishes to achieve the highest standards. The judges, Dr. Ritu Ahuja (faculty, department of mathematics) and Dr. Shaveta Chugh, (faculty, department of commerce) recognized the hard work of the students and identified the four best recipes to reward their culinary abilities.
Principal Dr. Kanwaljit Grewal lauded the creativity demonstrated by the students over the two-day event and congratulated Dr. Amarinder Caur, the Head of the Home Science department, for the event’s successful conclusion.
