“Old Age A Curse! Enabling Laws to Protect this Vulnerable Group”- An Extension Lecture at KCW

Legal Literacy Club of the Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, Ludhiana organized an extension lecture on “Old Age A Curse! Enabling Laws to Protect this Vulnerable Group” on 11th November 2022. Resource person Dr. Neelam Batra from the University Institute of Law, Panjab University, Regional Centre, Chandigarh enlightened students about the issues revolving around the sensitivities of old age and their rights. While talking about the “Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior citizens Act 2007”, she highlighted the physical and mental trauma the old group undergoes and apprised about the legal provisions under different sections and articles of Law. She also emphasized the old age group being neglected and abandoned by their own family and its aftereffects on the health and well-being of old people. She further discussed how the vulnerable group can approach the law and claim their rights, maintenance, and assistance. She also informed about various schemes by Central and State Governments introduced for the welfare of senior citizens. The session was concluded with an interactive session wherein students participated enthusiastically and raised questions that were answered satisfactorily by the resource person.

The Principal of the college congratulated Dr. Khushdip Kaur and Dr. Charita Mehta, Coordinators, Legal Literacy Club on bringing such an important issue to light. She further urged the students to play an active role in disseminating the information on issue to masses and help the much loved elders.
