Learning Life Skills To Deal With Emotional Distress

KCW Counselling Cell and the Department of Psychology, Khalsa College for Women,Civil lines,Ludhiana organised a workshop on dealing with emotional distress- “From Chaos to Calm.” The resource person, Ms Priya Kapila, a DBT and Life Skills Trainer from Toronto, Canada,apprised the participants on various techniques used to deal with emotional distress in everyday life.

They were introduced to DBT-Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by making them aware of various techniques like how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulating one’s emotions and improving relationships with others. Onthe whole, the participants were helped to learn to reduce vulnerability to emotional upheavals and build a life worth living.They were explained the concepts of emotions and taught to prefer a wise mind where emotions and reason overlapped instead of a solely moody emotional mind or a mechanisticreasonable mind.

This was followed by some activities where the participants learned how to asses their mood level on a mood scale and were taught the Half Smiling Relaxation Technique to help one deal with anxiety and feel more positive and happy.

The Principal, Dr(Mrs) Mukti Gill appreciated the efforts of the department of Psychology and motivated the students to learn various life skills to help themselves and others to deal with life challenges more effectively.
