The Department of Psychology, Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines Ludhiana, organised an interactive session with the students of Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind, Ludhiana to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, 2025. The main objective was to promote awareness, sensitivity, and inclusivity towards persons with disabilities, while also helping students understand real world challenges and strengths of differently abled individuals.
During the visit, the students interacted with visually impaired trainees who were actively engaged in various skill-development activities such as Braille learning and reading, weaving, and playing musical instruments. The staff of the centre oriented the students about the functioning of the institute, the training modules offered, and the role of vocational education in fostering independence and self-reliance among persons with visual impairment.
The visit allowed students to witness how adaptive technologies and structured training enable visually impaired individuals to perform daily tasks with remarkable precision. The interactions were deeply inspiring, as the students observed the confidence, determination, and discipline with which the trainees approached their learning. The faculty members highlighted the importance of empathy, accessibility, and respect while working with vulnerable populations, especially within the field of psychology.
Towards the end of the visit, the centre’s instructors conducted a brief demonstration on Braille reading techniques and mobility training, encouraging students to understand the lived experiences of visually impaired individuals. The students expressed that this exposure enriched their understanding of disability rights and the psychological needs of this community.
The Principal, Dr. Mrs. Kamaljit Grewal, appreciated the initiative taken by the Psychology Department for promoting awareness. She emphasized that such experiences nurture sensitivity among young learners and contribute to building a society where every individual regardless of ability receives equal respect, opportunity, and support.
